Dr. Mushtaler offering Acessa alternative hysterectomy procedure

Dr. Jennifer Mushtaler is one of a select group of national laparoscopic surgeons offering the Acessa procedure to women suffering from uterine fibroids as an alternative to hysterectomy.

Acessa Health Inc. Technology Featured in Ten-Year Review of Symptomatic Fibroid Management

Acessa Procedure Demonstrated Minimal Blood Loss, Shorter Hospitalization, Low Readmission and Re-intervention Rates

September 07, 2017 08:43 PM Eastern Daylight Time

AUSTIN, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Acessa Health Inc., developer of the Acessa® System, announced today that its laparoscopic radio frequency ablation technology was featured in a ten-year systematic review and meta-analysis of treatment options for uterine fibroids. The review, presented at MIS Week 2017 by Dr. Yelena Havryliuk of Weill Cornell Medical College, included an assessment of 143 journal articles from 2006 to 2016 and featured a quantitative synthesis (meta-analysis) of 45 studies during that period.

“The Acessa team is thrilled with the results of this comprehensive data review that overwhelmingly supports our technology as a superior intervention for women with symptomatic fibroids”

The weighted combined results from hysterectomy trials were compared with those from uterine-preserving fibroid studies including myomectomy, uterine artery embolization (UAE), laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation (Lap-RFA), and magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRg-FUS). Key findings of the review include:

  • Mean estimated blood loss following hysterectomy and myomectomy procedures exceeded 269 mL and 175 mL, respectively; Acessa’s Lap-RFA technology averaged 35 mL (nearly 8 times less than hysterectomy);
  • Hospitalization after hysterectomy, myomectomy, and UAE averaged 2.0 – 2.4 days whereas Acessa’s Lap-RFA procedure was performed on an outpatient basis in all cases studied;
  • Weighted average re-intervention rates after UAE and MRg-FUS ranged from 14.8% to 30.5% at 13-14 months whereas Acessa’s Lap-RFA averaged only 4.2% at 27-35 months;
  • Readmission rates within 90 days of discharge for MRg-FUS, UAE, and myomectomy procedures were 7.4%, 3.4%, and 2.7%, respectively, whereas Acessa’s Lap-RFA was 0.7%; and
  • Patients treated with Acessa’s Lap-RFA reported superior improvement in health-related quality of life and symptom severity scores relative to patients receiving hysterectomy, myomectomy or UAE.

“The Acessa team is thrilled with the results of this comprehensive data review that overwhelmingly supports our technology as a superior intervention for women with symptomatic fibroids,” said Kim Rodriguez, chief executive officer of Acessa Health Inc. “Acessa has been featured in more than 20 peer reviewed studies supporting its use. Dr. Harvryliuk’s meta review provides yet another encouraging data point as we seek to redefine the standard of care for millions of women suffering from fibroids.”

“I have used the Acessa System and been impressed with minimal blood loss, quick recovery, low re-intervention rates, and resolution of symptoms expressed by my patients,” said Dr. Havryliuk.

Uterine fibroids are typically benign tumors that can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, painful periods, uncomfortable pressure, and distention of the abdomen.1 Approximately 70 percent of women in the U.S. will develop fibroids by age 50; prevalence is higher among African Americans.2 Annual direct and indirect costs of symptomatic fibroids in the U.S. are estimated to exceed $34 billion.3

The Acessa System offers a safe, effective, and minimally invasive treatment. With Acessa, physicians use a laparoscopic instrument to deliver radiofrequency energy to fibroids. After the procedure, treated fibroids shrink and are reabsorbed by surrounding tissue.

Unlike many alternative interventions, Acessa can treat almost all sizes and locations of fibroids, including those outside the uterine cavity and within uterine walls. The procedure requires no cutting or suturing of uterine tissue, and patients typically go home the same day, experiencing minimal discomfort and a rapid return to normal activities. More than 1,700 women have been successfully treated with the Acessa System.

About the Acessa System

The Acessa System is the only radiofrequency ablation system cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and CE marked for use in percutaneous, laparoscopic coagulation and ablation of soft tissue, including treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids under laparoscopic ultrasound guidance. It has been the subject of 20 peer-reviewed publications across 750 study patients. In January 2017, the American Medical Association (AMA) issued a new Category 1 CPT code specifically for Laparoscopic Radiofrequency (RF) Ablation of Uterine Fibroids, paving the way for the Acessa procedure to become the standard of care for as many as 30 million women in the United States. All for a good cause, Dr. Mushtaler (OB JEN) was a good sport yesterday taking a pie in the face for a fundraiser.  Well, more accurately FIVE pies!  Benefitting the American Heart Association, Labor & Delivery nurses at St. David’s North Austin Women’s Center paid $5 per pie to smear the faces of participating physicians.  Dr. Mushtaler was one of several physicians who got hit, all in good fun.

Take a look!

Capital Ob/Gyn On Par with Cigna Network

Capital Ob/Gyn Associates is pleased to welcome Cigna network members to the practice. All three of our doctors have previously been participants in the Cigna network. Recent changes with Aetna’s acquisition of Cigna raised concerns about the future of the contracting relationship. Our practice is pleased to have been selected for preferred in-network contracting based on the high quality of care measures we provide. Our patients are cared for directly by our physicians. We do not utilize mid levels to move large numbers. We provide quality, intimate women’s gynecologic and obstetrical care.

New to Cigna? Looking for an in-network ob/gyn? Check out the bios of our three physicians and our staff will be pleased to assist you with your scheduling needs.

Doula Open House Success

Dr Jennifer Mushtaler and Dr Catherine Browne and their staff would like to thank last week’s attendees for a successful doula open house. Almost twenty doulas from around the Austin area came for a meet and greet, question and answer session and networking opportunity.

Doulas from the ATX Doulas, Birth Focus, Central Texas Doula Association, Austin Born and Giving Austin Labor Support came for the event. Also in attendance were doulas Morgan Miles, Jamie Gwynn, Leia Downs, Brooke Stage, Julie Garcia, Chan McDermott and Alexa Plunkett.

doula supportCapital Ob/Gyn Associates offers women personalized and intimate care during their pregnancy and birth. We care for women with low and high risk pregnancies. We are pleased to support women seeking VBAC and vaginal delivery for twin pregnancies. We are also supportive of a natural birth plan in a hospital setting. Capital Ob/Gyn welcomes doulas in support of their patients.

What is a doula? Doulas are labor companion. These women have a love and respect of the beauty of birth and are available for continuous support during the process to both patient and her companion(s). Studies have shown that women who labor with a doula have lower rates of medical intervention and greater success in achieving a natural and empowered birth experience.

Further, women have greater success with breast-feeding and a decreased incidence of postpartum depression when supported by a doula. Doulas can be very valuable and supportive to partners and spouses who may be new or uneasy about the birth experience.

doula-aidCan a doula deliver my baby? Doulas are not medically trained professionals and are not certified as midwives or physicians so they cannot deliver your baby or perform medical care. Doulas cannot offer medical advice, but they can help you to ask questions of your providers to feel comfortable and confident. Doulas can help you prepare for the birth experience and help you articulate your preferences for birth. Doulas can help be your voice when you are scared or unable to voice your own concerns. Many doulas are certified by their various organizations: DONA International, International Childbirth Education Association, Association of Labor Assistants and Childbirth Educators, Childbirth International, Childbirth and Post-partum Professional Association.

Are you interested in a natural birth or the support of a doula for your labor? Come and meet Capital Ob/Gyn Associates of Texas to explore your potential. We can also provide referrals to trusted doulas in our community.

Our office is located at 12201 Renfert Way, Suite 325, Austin TX 78758.  Please call our office at 512-836-2536 with any questions or for more detailed directions.

Getting the Most Out of Your Doc Visit

headshot_whitecoat
Dr. Jen Mushtaler (OB JEN)

We all know that scheduling timely and routine visits to the doctor is an important part of an overall healthy lifestyle.  However, many patients feel like their visits to the doctor are rushed. Here are some helpful tips from the insiders to help you get the most out of your appointment.

Scheduling is key.

First step to a successful visit is in the scheduling. Make sure you let the scheduler know what you need to address with the doctor so that your doctor can schedule the appropriate amount of time. Otherwise, your doctor may then be rushed to give everything full attention, and sometimes additional procedures need prior authorization with insurance. In our office, we try to schedule patient’s appropriate time based on the stated reason for the visit.

Plan head so you are not rushed.

Second, make sure you are not rushed for your appointment. We have had patients try to squeeze something in before they have to pick-up children or make a work meeting or another appointment. Ask the scheduler what is a reasonable amount of time to allot for your visit. Also, some days of the week may be more or less busy in the doctor’s office and may require more time. Many things can happen at your appointment time to get even the best planned schedules behind, so give a little extra wiggle room in case.

Bring a list of your medications with you.

Bring an accurate list of your medications with you to your appointment. Better yet, bring all your prescriptions and any vitamins with you. Some medications can interfere with each other or worse, be harmful, so you want your medical providers to have an up-to-date and complete list. Also, be sure your provider knows if you have stopped medications as well. New to the doctor? Bring a written list of any medical issues and previous surgeries.

Bring a list of questions for the doc.

Most of my patients are great about jotting down questions for their visit on their phone or I-pad or an old-fashioned piece of paper. I love it and encourage all patients to do that. It is easy to get nervous or even side-tracked during a visit and then remember after you left that you wanted to ask about something that did not get covered. Also, let your doctor know at the beginning of the visit that you brought your questions. It helps us to plan the time during your visit to allow for discussion.

Getting additional tests?

Ask your doctor specifically what labs they will order so you can make sure that those labs are drawn. Then make sure you know the timeline for your results and how those will be communicated. Some offices are able to let patients check their own results online. In our office, we notify patients of results. I am not a fan of no news is good news because I have seen results get lost that need follow-up.

Getting a new prescription?

Confirm with your doctor what medications are being ordered. Most prescriptions are now faxed electronically, but to be your own best advocate you should know what medications you are taking, old and new. Also, sometimes pharmacies will offer to substitute generics and that’s when some mistakes can happen.

Check prescription coverage with your insurance company.

Another helpful hint, if you know you will be needing a particular type of medication, check to see what the level of coverage is with your insurance company. Different medications may have different co-pays, so if your doctor knows what is covered at tier 1, they may be able to help guide you to something more affordable and just as effective. Unfortunately, we don’t have that information and it is certainly not our intention to prescribe a medication the patient will be unable to take because of costs. For example, birth controls are covered by insurers now, but not all name brands or types may be covered by a particular plan. Don’t forget to have your pharmacy of choice ready to give your doctor’s office as well.

Happy scheduling!

Remember, the best way to get the most out of your appointment is to make sure that both you and your doctor’s office have scheduled appropriately and that you are prepared with an up-to-date list of medicines and concerns to be addressed.
